Guy Maxwell, a science teacher at the high school, was recently chosen as the recipient for the 2015 Howard Huyck Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher Award. This award is given to a chemistry teacher in the Kentucky Lake geographical region. As the winner, Maxwell was awarded a plaque, certificate, cash and a nomination for the American Chemical Society Southeastern Regional Meeting Board (SERMACS) Outstanding Teacher Award. Maxwell was presented the award by Rebecca Brown, a professor in Kentucky and the granddaughter of Howard Huyck.

“[I feel] honored because this is not one that you nominate yourself for. The people that nominate you are chemistry people whether they’re teachers or chemists in industry. They know what you’re doing,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell has been teaching for 23 years, the last three years at DHS. Along with chemistry, Maxwell has also taught courses such as AP Biology, Anatomy and Physiology and Physics.

“[My favorite part about teaching is] watching students accomplish challenges they thought they couldn’t,” Maxwell said.
